his twitching left eye filled our peepholes each in turn. On the basis of his "bug eye" and short, fat build, somewhat like a ladybug, he was forthwith permanently named "Bug." It crossed my mind that we would see a lot of him—but even in this brief encounter, it came through that he was no Rabbit. He was mean, but he didn't have that dangerous cunning streak; I predicted Bug would stick right by their book, a slave to prescribed doctrine. That meant this gang in here could play him like a violin.

After Bug left and I gave the "all clear," I recognized Sam Johnsons touch as he thumped for us all to hear: bump bump—bump bump (pause) bump bump bump—bump bump bump (gn —"good night"); bump bump—bump bump (pause) bump—bump bump (pause) bump bump bump bump—bump bump bump bump bump (gbu —"God bless you").

We had to shut off that torture machine, and I now had the tools to do it, if Uncle Sam would just get the specifics on North Vietnam's violations of international law into Americas public domain, into the Washington Post, into the New York Times. Vietnam would have to come off it; without propaganda, without American public opinion, they'd be sunk. Even Dr. Vien said that. "We will win this war on the streets of New York." Ha! Come on, Muste, come on, Patricia Griffith, at least one of those letters had to be in the chemical lab by now*

I was getting sleepy again. I liked this gang. Who was this kid Coker? Id heard he looked like Jimmy Cagney, and had been acting like Jimmy Cagney in Sing Sing ever since he got here . . . Jimmy Cagney. . . Jimmy Cagney. . . Jimmy Cagney. . .

Clang! Clang! Clang! ... I'd been asleep. It was the morning gong. I was back in Hoa Lo Prison again.

Bang! My door swung open. I'm number one to dump
